One common bug in Alpharetta is the carpenter ant. Although they are less destructive than termites, carpenter ants can still be a problem. They can damage wooden parts of your home or office. And if left untreated, an infestation can cause sever damage over time.

Carpenter Ants or Termites

Carpenter ants burrow into wooden parts of your structure like termites. But there are some major differences. The biggest difference is that termites actually eat wood. Carpenter ants don’t gain any nutrition from the wood they chew. They just chew tunnels into wooden parts of your house to create burrows and nests.

One way to identify a carpenter ant infestation is by the little wood shavings you may find beneath wooden objects. Carpenter ant debris look like pencil shavings. They have different shapes and sizes. Termite droppings will be a consistent shape and size. You can also examine the actual burrows. Carpenter ants like to keep their burrows clean. You will find a pile of debris and dead insects outside the entrance to the burrow. Termite burrows, on the other hand, can be messy, full of soil and other debris. Carpenter ants also make little holes in their nests to expel debris. So if you see little holes along a wooden object, those may be a sign of carpenter ants.

One of the most obvious signs of a carpenter ant infestation is the appearance of large winged ants. They may drop from your ceiling or come out of walls and small crevices. The appearance of a few unwinged carpenter ants is not a sure sign of infestation. (The ants can forage great distances from their nests.) But if you start seeing the winged ants you almost certainly have an infestation.

What to Do About an Infestation

If left untreated, a carpenter ant colony can grow and even create satellite colonies. Over time this could cause sever wood damage. To completely eradicate carpenter ants and ensure that they don’t come back, it is best to
call in an exterminator like People’s Pest Control. They will give you a free quote not just to get rid of the ants, but to make sure they don’t return. If you like our service (and we know you will) we will set up a plan for quarterly treatments. You will be protected from carpenter ants plus 99% of common pests in Georgia.
